“Fair Conditions” By Six Expected

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 25. “Britain has got to co-operate in building up a new and strong Europe,” said the British High Commissioner, Sir Francis CummingBruce, at Wellington airport this afternoon on his return to New Zealand after an absence of five weeks in the United Kingdom, where he went for discussions with his Government on the European Economic Community.

“From the discussions so far, our Ministers believe that fair conditions can be worked out which will safeguard New Zealand interests.” he said.

According to Sir Francis Cumming-Bruce, the two British Ministers concerned with the Common Market negotiations. Messrs Duncan Sandys and Edward Heath, as well as the Prime Minister, Mr Macmillan, greatly appreciated the presence in London of the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Marshall, and the work he did. The discussions with him were most helpful and appreciated because Britain did not want to take a single step in the present difficult negotiations without the fullest knowledge of the Commonwealth countries.

“Every one of our Ministers knows that the dairy and pastoral industries are the rock on which New Zealand stands,” he said. The British people assumed that the Commonwealth countries would look at the whole problem in a cooperative and flexible way and would face the possibilities with a certain amount of adaptability. It could be taken that the Six were fully appreciative of the special problems confronting New Zealand in the negotiations. “Our Ministers were also extremely glad td have the opportunity of discussions with the representatives of

your producer boards," he said. “The Ministers recognised that the question was, in New Zealand above all, a matter for the farmers and they were glad to be able to hear the farmers’ problems so clearly expressed both by the producer representatives and by Mr Marshall.” Sir Francis Cumming-Bruce said.
