WHOLESALE TRADE
Sales Fall 4 Per Cent. Sales or turnover of wholesalers fell nearly 4 per cent, in the first quarter of this year, compared with the same quarter of 1961, according to the Department of Statistics. The department’s quarterly survey shows that turnover of surveyed wholesale firms was £ 105.1 m during the quarter, compared with £ 109.2 m in the same quarter in 1961. These figures may be compared with the department’s estimates of retail trade in the same period: £ 143.0 m in the first quarter of 1962. a rise of £2.6m or 18 per cent., on the comparable 1961 figure. Automotive wholesalers' sales, at £ 14.5 m, showed the biggest rise—9.9 per cent. “Miscellaneous" wholesalers’ sales, down 11.5 per cent., showed the biggest fall. Turnover of each of the eight types of wholesalers is shown in the following table, with the variation compared with the same period of 1961. Turnover Var’n.
