(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. June 25.

Houses were evacuated and three fire engines stood by in Papatoetoe tonight when a loaded petrol tanker ran into a drain in St. George's road. Emergency precautions Were taken while the cargo of petrol was transferred to another tanker. ~ Families in eight nearby houses were asked to put out their fires and leave their homes. They were evacuated about 7.30 p.m. and allowed to return two hours later. Some of the 3000 gallons of petrol in the tanker leaked on to the road and in the ditch and care was taken to ensure that no cigarettes were lighted by the crowd that gathered. The tanker, which was delivering a load of petrol to a Papatoetoe garage, went into the drain when the driver swerved to avoid an oncoming car..

A tow waggon and a transporter were able to pull the tanker back on to the road after the petrol cargo had been transferred.
