Award To Young Rangiora Man c

Mr L F. Beath, of Rangiora, who celebrated his twenty-first birthday yesterday. has been awarded one of three scholarships made available to residents of New Zealand by the West German Government through the German Academic Exchange Service for study at a German university in any field Mr Beath gained the scholarship for the outstanding progress he has shown in German language studies at Canterbury University At nresent the holder of a bachelor of arts degree with Ger- 1 man and English advanced to stage three. Mr Beath is this year working to complete his master of arts degree with honours in German. The scholarship is made available for one year's study at any German university.

When he gained his school certificate at the Rangiora High School, his were among the top marks in New Zealand He won a University National Scholarship as a pupil at the Christchurch Boys’ High School offering Latin. English. French, and mipc as his subjects

While at Boys' High School. Mr Beath was one of a number of secondary school pupils chosen for an excharge visit to New Caledonia. to further his French studies During the university vacations in Germany. Mr Beath hopes he will be able to advance his knowledge of other languages, particularly French, by visits to other countries. Musical Ability Music is another interest of Mr Beath who has shown outstanding ability as a pianist Mr Beath gained his diploma of L.RSM just after his sixteenth b.rthday and un to that stage he was nrr'b’bly the youngest person n New Zealand to gain the award

As the result of an audition for this examination. Mr Beath was favourably recommended for a scholarship to the Royal Schools of Music in London, but he was considered too young to be granted the award, which was usually made to persons of about 19 or 20 years. In 1958 Mr Beath was awarded the Noel Newson prize as the most oromising pianist in Ch-istchurch Mr Bea’h is the son of 'he late Mr L S Beath and Mrs E M Beath. of Rangiora

Boys Apprehended.—Five cars were converted in Christchurch during the week-end and five boys have been apprehended bv detectives. Two are aged 10 and 11 and the eldest is 14. One of the ears was damaged.
