LEAGUE Papanui Beaten By Hornby, 11-9

Papanui lost the lead it shared with Hornby in the Canterbury Rugby League's senior competition. when it was narrowly but decisively beaten by Hornby. 11-9, on Saturday. Before the biggest crowd of the season, both sides provided a high standard of football. In the curtain-raiser. Sydenham had its first win of the season when it beat Christchurch, and Linwood had a handsome win over Marist. Results were: Hornby 11, Papanui 9 Linwood 24, Marist 8 Sydenham 5, Christchurch 0. The position of the teams is:—

PAPANUI v. HORNBY From D. Moore's try in the first two minutes of the game the Hornby forwards heia a masterly grip. and although Papanui brightened appreciably in the second half. Hornby was never in real danger of losing the match. Hornby’s three tries were scored by forward. Moore and M. L. Cooke, who were the driving force behind a well-drilled and highly efficient pack. The superiority of the Hornby forwads was evident, too, in the scrums where R. Woodgate outhooked the Canterbury representative, G. Blackler, from 31 of the 45 scrums. But the Hornby backs saw little of the ball from the scrums. The heeling was untidy and slow and the scrum collapsed repeatedly. There was much to admire in Papanui’s performance in the second spell, for although still deprived of possession it recovered splendidly. The forwards were more willing than the Hornby pack to open up play for their backs, but in the first spell especially, their individual bursts were ineffective The Hornby first five-eighth, J. M. Bray, "gave another competent and useful display and D. Moore was in tremendous form in the first half when he stood wide and deep from play-the-ball to make several bold thrusts. Moore (2) and Cooke scored tries for Hornby and I. Drayton converted one. For Papanui G. Bond scored a try and E. J. Ta vendale kicked two penalties and converted Bond's try. Mr D C Wilson was the referee LINWOOD v. MARIST Making better use of the opportunities afforded it Linwood had a convincing and deserved win over Marist. At half-time it looked as though the match could go either way, but in the second half Linwood was in command and a victory was never in doubt. As a spectacle the match was disapjiointing owing to both sides* lack of ability in the fundamentals. The tackling by the Marist players was very poor Both, teams attempted to open up the game, but misdirected passes and bad handing spoiled many promising moves. A feature of the game was the kicking of both sides. Usually this resulted in lost possession. Shortly before the end of the match two players began an open brawl in the middle of the field. Another player, attempting to break up the fight, received a misplaced uppercut. The best of the Linwood backs was G. Abercrombie and in the forwards John Flanagan and J Fishet* both went very well- R. Irvine did good work for Marist. and B. Curtain. on the wing, always looked dangerous. M. Mohi and A. Newsome were the pick of the forwards Tries for Linwood were scored by Abercrombie. Flanagan, J. Stove and A. Journee A. Smith kicked four conversions and two penalty goals. L. Mulcare and J. Walshe scored for Marist and H. Nepia kicked one conversion. Mr P Yaxley was the referee SYDENHAM V. CHRISTCHURCH Sydenham gave further proof of its improving form when it wore down Christchurch to score its first success of the season. It was a very even struggle until the final quarter when Sydenham gained decided territorial and possession advantage. It was not until the sixtyeighth minute that the first points were scored when T. L. Bisman kicked a vital penalty for Sydenham. Five minutes later J. Martin put the result

beyond all doubt when he scored a try in the corner after a fine run of 60 yards. Both sides were eager to spin the ball, but solid tackling kept most of the efforts in sound check. However, on the rare occasions when a player was able to penetrate the defence, chances of scoring were often fritted away by incompetence and the inability to pass at the right moment. The most pleasing of the Sydenham players were the first five-eighths. K. Harding, who gave a tradesman like display, and two hard-working forwards. Bisman and R. McKenzie. For Sydenham Bisman kicked a penalty and Martin scored a try. Mr J. Beales was the referee.
