SQUASH RACKETS South Canterbury Title To C. Waugh

The national squash rackets champion. C Waugh, of Palmerston North, left Timaru galleries in no doubt of his class when he won the South Canterbury title yesterday. In winning without the loss of a game in any of his four matches. Waugh showed that he is probably an even better player than he was last season. for he displayed great variety of shot in addition to his superb physical fitness.

In the final. Waugh met the new Canterbury open champion. K. R Green (Timaru) after beating another nationally-ranked player in G. L. Bird, the New Zealand junior champion, in the semifinals.

The final was remarkably free from errors and many of those were forced by nearperfect length, and featured great variety of shot Waugh won not only by making use of his renowned retrieving ability, but because of sound placement and the large number of winners he hit. many of them acute angled shots often from seemingly difficult positions He made one more error than Green but scored nearly twice the winners and in doing so he often displayed fine and delicate touch. He may still lack a really killing drive, but in his present form, featuring a much greater range

of shot* than before. Waugh is likely to continue hit gemination of squash racket! in New Zealand for lome time. In the other sami-flnal Green met F. N. Coe. winner of this championship in six of the last eight years, and as expected there was not a great deal between them.

This tournament drew a record entry, and the standard throughout was very good. There were many entertaining matches in the early rounds, particularly two of the quarter-finals between Waugh and P. L. MacKenzie, and Coe and B. J. Rippen, who fully extended the former title-holder. In the other two quarter-finals Bird beat P. M. Hill, and Green M. J.
