Cathedral Square Traffic
Sir.—l draw attention to the very serious hazard that exists at the northern outlet of Cathedral square. Pedestrians will insist on using the old pedestrian crossing from Woodwards corner to the Ernest Adams corner thus impeding the smooth flow of traffic into and out of the square. I have had many near-misses and have had to brake suddenly to avoid hitting pedestrians. Could not a traffic -officer be stationed there to stop this? Perhaps a “don't cross” sign could be erected. This breach of law defeats the object of the “Barnes Dance” at Gloucester and Colombo streets.—Yours, etc., MOTORIST. June 18, 1962. (The city traffic superintendent (Mr J. F. Thomas) said: “It is an offence for a pedestrian to cross the roadway within 60ft of an authorised pedestrian crossing. Officers of this department have, during the last few weeks, been p-aying particular attention to pedestrian crossings for the purpose of advising pedestrians of their obligations.”}
