Haast-Paringa Road
Sir. —No comment from the District Commissioner of Works on the letter from vour correspondent, “Blue River.” suggests that if your correspondent is correct in saying that “progress during six years has been little better than a standstill." then the cause of delay may be in Wellington. A deputation to Ministers concerned might help. Mr Nash's recent statement that the West Coast has "had’ its share” is ominous because it ignores large expenditure on non-profit-making works in large centres, and ignores the national importance of the Haast-Paringa road. Many years of delay in starting the new hotel at Franz Josef indicate lack of interest in South Westland. It is now hoped to have the hotel ready for the opening of the road. Will this result in the road being delayed still further. to suit the opening of the hotel? Why not have the road open next summer?— Yours, etc..
ARTHUR LUSH. June 21. 1962.
