New Application For Baisweil Water Loan
It looked as if the Halswell Counity Council would get permission to raise a £62.000 loan for water supplies in new residential areas, the chairman (Mr H. Cox) told the council yesterday. He was commenting on the outcome of a meeting between a deputation from the council and the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Gotz) and other Government officials. Permission to raise the loan was earlier deferred by the Local Authorities Loans Board. Cr. G. Van Asch said Mr Gotz saw no reason why the council could not raise the loan. It was agreed by officers of the Department of Health that the only satisfactory solution in the long term was full reticulation of both water and sewage. Tire officers agreed that the council would have a problem financing both works at the same time, Mr Van Asch said.
On the advice of the secretary of the loans board (Mr
K. Brown) to the deputation the council decided to make formal application for renewed consideration. Another letter will go to the local office of the Department of Health, assuring it that sewerage works would be started as soon as the water problem was overcome. A committee comprising Cr. Van Asch, the engineer and Cr. J. Y. Pethig will seek a meeting with members and engineers of the Christchurch Drainage Board to discuss the board's part in any future sewerage scheme. "I think the only practical scheme is a major one.” Mr Cox said.
Agreeing with this, the council deferred action on a £23.000 scheme proposed by Mr A. J. Cunningham for his subdivision.
