Communist Losses
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) SAIGON, June 20. Vietnamese infantry surprised elements of two Communist guerrilla battalions and wiped out a company, Government sources said yesterday. Guerrilla losses were given as 48 dead, 80 captured and an undetermined number wounded in a two-day battle that ended on Sunday in the southern delta, on the border of Vinh and An Giang Provinces. The Government forces reported only one officer and one other rank killed, the sources said. Eighteen United States Marine helicopters were used on Monday in a strike against guerrillas 40 miles souitih-west of Saigon. Casualty reports varied between seven and 14 guerrillas killed. This operation was supported by Ameri-can-supplied fighter-bombers. A guerrilla force staged a neat ambush on Monday on national highway one about 25 miles east of Saigon and trapped two Government armoured cars and a truck carrying a platoon of infantry, the source said. The Government reported its troops lost five deed but claimed four guerrillas were killed.
