TEACHERS TO GO TO P.S. TRIBUNAL

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, June 19. The Post-Primary Teachers’ Association will take a dispute to the Government Service Tribunal for the first time since 1952. The national executive of the association announced today that it would lodge with the tribunal the matter of payment for school certificate marking. “We have always endeavured to settle conditions and salaries by negotiation and discussion with the department and the Minister.” said the executive. “We have, in this instance, been forced to exercise our

legal remedies by the refusal of the department and the Minister to negotiate this issue. “Not only have they refused to negotiate but they have denied our right to make representations on behalf of markers. . . .” The executive said that a fortnight ago it had asked the Minister “for conciliation or arbitration and informed him that if this was acceptable marking would proceed this year as usual. “The Minister chose to reject this proposal outright. “Rarely in the whole history of teacher-Government relations has there been such a feeling of frustration. . . ~” the executive said.
