BAD START TO JOURNEY
Brothers Fined For Assault N.Z Press Association) DUNEDIN. June 18 Two brothers, Robert Sidney McAneney, aged 32. and Oliver Henry McAneney. aged 29. had saved about £BOOO between them and were starting out in high spirits on the return journey to their native Ireland. The trip was interrupted at Palmerston, however, when an incident on the north-bound express on Saturday resulted in the two making an appearance before Mr J. G. Warrington, S M.. in the Magistrate's Court at Dunedin today, facing the charge of assault. Robert McAneney, rigger, and Oliver McAneney. a miner, pleaded guilty and were fined £24.
A. Hunt said that Kenneth John Lemm. a passenger on the train, spoke to the brothers regarding their behaviour. He was struck by Robert McAneney, and when he retaliated he was hit on the head with a bottle by the other brother. Mr G’. A. Howley, for the accused, said they were on their way home to Ireland, and. naturally, were in high spirits. It was only six months since Oliver McAneney had been before the Court on a charge of assault, the Magistrate said. On counsel’s assurance that they were leaving the country he imposed a fine.
