Indoor Bowls NATIONAL SINGLES

527 Players Qualify (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. June 17. With a record entry of 1545 players, compared with 865 at Dunedin last year, the national indoor bowls champion singles got under way on Saturday and continued until this evening when 527 players qualified. The qualifiers included Mrs R. Motion (Wellington), last year’s runner-up. and the 1959 title-holder, W. Wells, also of Wellington. The present pairs titleholders, M. Lunt and E. G. F. Smith (Canterbury), along with two of the successful fours team. Mrs L, Harvey and E. Blackmore (Southland), also managed to survive section play. A most impressive display was given by Mrs C. Joseph. a well-known player from the King Country. She finished the day with three wins.

The Auckland Empire Games bowls representative, R. McDonald, was in good form to go through undefeated. Mrs E. Marshall (Hutt Valley), who has had the distinction of playing in all 13 national tournaments, failed to make the grade.
