SOVIET FLIGHTS TO ANTARCTIC

Screened
The welcome given at the Christchurch airport to the two Soviet aircraft which landed there in December on their way to and from the Antarctic is shown in a film which is expected to be screened soon at cinemas throughout the Soviet Union. Recently two 35 m m colour films. “To the Antarctic on Wings" and "A Peaceful Continent.” were screened in Moscow at a joint meeting of the U.S S R.-New Zealand and USSR.-Australia societies. The former film covers the flight from Moscow to Mirny and back, with shots taken at all stops: the latter deals with activities in Antarctica In addition to the filmed record of the first Soviet Antarctic air expedition, a small book was recently published by the Soviet Youth Publishing House. Written by Mr L. V. Pochivalov, regional correspondent for India and South-east Asia for the Russian youth paper. “Komsomolskaya Pravda.” the book has a chapter on Christchurch, which is reported to have made a big impression on the expedition's members.
