ATTACK ON STUDENTS
Demonstration At House
(Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON. June 15.
An attack on the students who took part in a demonstration at the opening of Parliament was made by Mr H. J. Walker (Government St. Albans) in the course of the Address-in-Reply debate in the House of Representatives. Mr Walker referred to students lounging around the main doorway and carrying banners with misquoted slogans. “They looked as if they had failed in their examinations. “I think we can claim the students keep the community on their toes, but I think that this sort of performance, especially in front of the Governor-General, is deplorable,” he said. He said that, as well as increased fees. university students were receiving increased benefits under the new system. Mr Walker praised the Victoria University Students' Association executive for its attitude over the demonstration. and for its advice to students generally to have no part in it. “They showed good citizenship,” Mr Walker said.
