Obituary MR S. C. STOKES
Mr S. C. Stokes, of Oxford, who died recently, had a lifetime of experience in farming.
Born at Waikuku, the third son of the late Mr M. H. Stokes, he was educated at Waikuku School and then worked for his father at Waikuku for many years. After his father's death in 1924 he was associated with two brothers in carrying on the home farm and other farms at Waikuku and Omihi valley.
In 1938 he went into partnership with the late Mr XV. L. Parkinson, the well known cattle buyer, in Lees Valley Estates and after Mr Parkinson's death his sons. Messrs I. and B. Stokes, were associated with him in this enterprise. Mr Stokes also retained the Omihi valley property.
For 15 years Mr Stokes was vicar's warden at the Glenmark Anglican Church and earlier he served on the vestry of the Woodend Anglican Church for a similar period. A former president of the Amberley Agricultural and Pastoral Association he was also a member of the Brackenfield Hunt, a steward of the Rangiora Trotting Club and a former steward and vice-president of the Amberley Trotting Club. He also was a former chairman of the Omihi School Committee and was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Amberley In 1937 he married Miss Ruby Orr, of Greymouth, who survives him. There are three children —Messrs I. Stokes, of Lees valley, and B Stokes, of Oxford, and Miss Margaret Stokes, who is at present on a working holiday in England. Mr Stokes was well known in the farming community for his acts of generosity.
