ELECTION OF PRESIDENT
Peru Returns Incomplete (N.Z. Press Association) LIMA (Peru), June 14. Peru's Congress eventually mjy have to decide the winner of Sunday’s Presidential election. Incomplete unofficial returns indicated this today. Two of the candidates, Mr Frnando Belaunde Terry, of the Popular Action Pary, and Mr Victor Haya de la Torre, of the A.P.R.A. party, claimed to be leading with an estimated 90 per cent, of the 1.800,000 ballots counted. However, where Mr Belaunde claimed to have the necessary 34 per cent, of the vote to win without a congressional mandate, Mr Haya said his margin was so slim it might be up to the 235-man Congress to name him the official winner. The third candidate, the former president. Mr Manuel Odria, discontinued publishing his private election totals although his supporters maintained he was far from out of the running.
S.A. Students’ Protest Bid
(N.Z. Press Assn.— Copyright) CAPE TOWN, June 14.
Hundreds of students who gathered in the Cape Town sports’ field last night under a wintry sky were locked in by police to prevent a torchlight protest march against the Government’s Sabotage Bill. Lorry-loads of police surrounded the field and locked the high iron gates, the Associated Press reported. After two hours in the freezing cold on the field, the students decided that they had won a moral victory by being locked in. They were let out, but police arrested 10 of them who walked in the direction of Parliament. They were released later.
