TUNNEL TO PORT

Shafts Will Meet Today

From this afternoon it will be possible to walk through the road tunnel connecting Christchurch with Lytelton A blast of the main face of ihe tunnel on the city side will connect with the 6ft by Bft pilot tunnel which has been driven from the Lyttelton end by a contract team. Only about 33ft separated the drives yesterday afternoon, and with five major blasts to go. the tunnel should be pierced early this afternoon. Work from the Lyttelton end stopped on Wednesday because of the danger of dislodged rocks from the major blasts at the main face No formal ceremony has been arranged for the first showing of light through the tunnel, but most members of the Road Tunnel Authority will be at the tunnel For the contractors and the men on the job the piercing, although an important stage in the project, will be just another day’s work For them the real day will be when the full face breaks out into Lyttelton. The pilot drive, which is high up in the face of the main tunnel, will be welcomed by the tunnellers and all the employees who have to cart out the spoil, as it will provide a draught of fresh air at the face, which, in spite of massive ventilation fans, has had a thick atmosphere for some weeks
