Red Cross Appeal
Though founded as a result of war, the Red Cross, in the second century of its existence, is synonymous with emergency relief of human suffering, however caused. Since its foundation, the international organisation and its branches throughout the world have acquired a unique reputation as benefactors of humanity. This fact alone should ensure public endorsement of today’s Red Cross appeal in Christchurch. One of the most important characteristics of the society has been its ability to adapt itself to the
requirements of a changed social environment. Its “ meals-on-wheels ” scheme, for instance, has helped notably towards easing the problems of geriatric and invalid care. The society’s activities nowadays are so varied that few sections of the community are untouched. Voluntary organisations of this sort are especially valuable in the welfare State as local channels of personal philanthropy. The public, therefore, should welcome an opportunity of helping a society that exists to help others.
