Open Day Held Yesterday

The special features of the Parents' National Educational Union system of education were demonstrated for parents of children attending the Selwyn House P.N.E.U. School in Papanui road at the school’s annual open day yesterday. Throughout the morning and afternoon, large numbers of visitors and interested observers inspected pupils’ work and sat in at classes being conducted under the normal school timetable. Methods of teaching in subjects ranging from Bible teaching, literature, art and musical appreciation to current affairs, science, arithmetic. ballet dancing and citizenship were all under survey by those attending. Displays of needlework, art and craft work were arranged in the mein hall and individual classrooms and demonstrations of the school’s normal afternoon ballet classes were given under the direction of Miss L Barry-Baker These classes, open to all girls interested, were at present attended by more than half the school's pupils, said the principal (Mrs F. Miller).

Selwyn House Party

Open day activities held by Selwyn House PN.E.U School yesterday concluded with a cocktail party at the school in the evening to enable parents from town and country to meet each other and tbe school's teachers. About 70 persons attended They ware welcomed by the president of the Selwyn House PJi.E.U. Association (Mr A. Miller) and Mrs Miller. Among the apecially-invited guests were the school's headmistress (Mrs F Miller), the headmaster of Medbury School (Mr F. C. Chennells) and Mrs Chennells. and the Rev. W. Limmerick. A highlight of the function was an auction, mostly of produce, to augment school funds. Auctioneer was Mr H D. Matson. The decorative theme was pink, carried out in camellias, japonica and daphne, and making an attractive foil to silver candlesticks on the tables.
