A sum of at least £4170 will be given to the Canterbury Sheltered Workshop Association soon by the students of the University of Canterbury. This was announced by the vice-presi-dent of the Students’ Association (Mr D Natuschl a’ the annual meeting of the w’onkshop association yesterday As well as the contribution of money, it was hoped that the association would benefit from the wide publicity connected with the project, Mr Natusch said. The motif used by the students for the campaign had been boughi from the artist, Mr Natusch said. He presented it to the association and suggested its use. as it had become wellknown. He said the money could be handed over any time but the students’ association would prefer to wait another month as it was believed more was still to come An assurance of the willingness of the students to assist the workshop association in other ways in the future was given by Mr Natusch. He was deeply impressed with the students’ effort, said the Mayor <Mr G Manning), patron of the association. Tc have students, persons of youth and vitality, taking such a constructive interest in the needs of the community was commendable, he said Their campaigns annually brought them into contact with some of society’s
problems and their recognition of this work and their assistance was of great value to the community. Mr Manning said. The response of the public was also commendable, he said. The fact that in Christchurch there were organisations to cater for and to assist, all kinds of handicapped persons showed that the public conscience here had developed to meet the challenge presented by the handicapped elements in society The magnificent response to this particular appeal showed the citizens of Christchurch were in deep sympathy with the work of the Sheltered Workshop Association, said Mr Manning. Although lack of space had prevented an increase of more than two this year in the number of handicapped persons in the workshop considerable progress was reflected in that more than twice the number had been placed in positions of employment after training by the association, said the president (Mr E R. Clark). Eleven trainees were placed in employment during the year, compared with five last year, be said Twenty new enrolments had been received, bringing the total number of trainees to 26—15 women and 11 men Last year the peak roll had been 24. he said Appreciation of the assistance given by members of the Christchurch North Round Table in alteration.to the new premises and help glyen in moving, was expressed by Mr Clark
