PLANNING ACT
County Duties In Operation (N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, June 13. The requirements of the Town and Country Planning Act must be accepted and operated by local authorities in the interests of the citizens and the country, the Minister of Works (Mr Goosman) told delegates at the conference of the Counties Association in Dunedin today. The act had caused much work and worry, he said, and had been the subject of considerable criticism.
“But most people agree on the need for the legislation. They realise it is necessary for the protection of property values,” said the Minister.
The responsibilities and activities of counties had increased and. widened considerably, the Minister said. The legislation was intricate and difficult, but advice was always available to local bodies in doubt.
County co-operation was needed. Most councils were helpful, but others could improve.
The Counties Amendment Act, 1961, which came into force in April, transferred to county councils responsibility for control of subdivisions.
Counties now must protect farmland and the county's ability to increase primary production. as well as guard arterial roads from the throttling influence of urban development, said Mr Goosman.
