UNION WITH U.S.

Idea Deplored. Bv American j (N.Z. Press Association) WAIROA. June 8. “As an honest American, may I ask you to oppose this,’’ said Mr Frank B. Innes, of Pennsylvania, referring to a suggestion that New Zealand moved closer politically to the United States if Britain joined the E.E.C. The letter, written on May 28 to a Wairoa resident, said: “Today’s ‘New York Times’ carried a story on the revival of the idea of New Zealand tieing in with us politically because of the Common Market crisis. “As an honest American may I ask you to oppose this. Not because we don’t want you, but rather because your New Zealand way of life may well suffer from our crass materialism.”

Mr Innes’ son is in New Zealand for a year as an American Rotary exchange student. “After eight months close contact with your magnificent country and wonderfully friendly people, he would hate to see you change any of what you have,” wrote Mr Innes.
