Rongotai Responsible Dr. W. B. Sutch, Secretary of Industries and Commerce, was unable to give the first lecture in a lunch-hour series on “The Welfare State” at the University of Canterbury yesterday, as his aircraft was delayed. Mr P. J. Carroll, head of the Department of Industries and Commerce in Christchurch, and formerly of Wellington, gave a substitute address at an hour's notice. He prefaced his talk by saying; “Dr. Sutch is not here—not because of Harewood (laughter). It was Rongotai.” The audience of about 120, who had gathered to hear Dr. Sutch. remained to hear Mr Carroll. Publicity For N.Z. The salmon were being reared at the farm as an experiment, said Mr Hay The eggs were obtained from salmon caught locally, and the fry would be released, if the experiment was successful, in lakes in the society's district. A quinnat salmon hatchery was operated successfully at Hakataramea for n<any years by the Marine Department, and several acclimatisation societies have reared t’ e species. The Ashburton society has , been rearing quinnat salmon for some seasons. The salmon is a native of North America. Meters Moved Sixty-two parking meters at the south end of Manchester street leading into Moorhouse avenue were yesterday removed and placed in position in Hereford street east of Manchester street and leading into Latimer square The southern end of Manchester street has now been declared a 30m in area. The Christchurch City Council’s traffic superintendent (Mr J. F Thomas) said yesterday that meters to arrive this year would be used in Gloucester street and possibly in Latimer square. Town Hall The project for a town hall for Christchurch has close relation to the praiseworthy work being done to develop Christchurch airport for jet travel, says the annual report of Town Hall Promotion “A town hall suitable not only for festival occasions but for conferences, etc., fits into this picture of encouraging people to visit Christchurch, and for this reason the erection of a town hall should be accorded the urgency its importance to the general economy deserves,” the report says

New Traffic Lights The newly installed traffic lights at the Christchurch Hospital corner were expected to be in operation on either Monday or Tuesday morning, said the City Council’s traffic superintendent iMr J F Thomas) yesterday.
