VITAL SOCCER GAME
•THIS afternoon’s soccer 1 match at English Park between Nomads and Shamrock could decide the Hurley Shield competition for this season. Nomads are at present two points ahead of Shamrock, which is second equal with Western. Western will also have a hard match today, against last year’s winning side. Technical.
If Nomads win this afternoon, they will be in a very strong position. They will meet Western in the final round and, if Western loses today, Nomads could be unbeatable. Even if Nomads and Western both win today. Western would have to win the last match by quite a large margin to win on goal averages. A win to Shamrock this afternoon could bring the three teams to an equal position at the top of the table. Shamrock's wins this season have all been by small margins, so the side would have little chance of success if it was involved in a countback When they met in the first ■ round, Shamrock and
Nomads had an even match, with Nomads winning 2-1. Shamrock could well reverse this result if its forwards can retain their new-found energy and combination which took the side to a 3-1 win over Western recently. Shamrock’s defence is the best in the competition, but it will need goals from the forwards if the match is to be won.
Nomads, relying more on speed and opportunism in the forward line, will give the Shamrock defence a thorough tes'.ing. Similarly, a lot will depend on the ability of the Nomads defence to rise to the occasion. The defence has been bustled in previous matches and J. Price, W. Yates and H. Scholten, of Shamrock, could accomplish .his again.
