Record Entry At Caged-Bird Show

A record entry, of 831 birds in eight sections, was received for the Society of Cage Birds twenty-third annual three-day show, opened by the Mayor of Riccarton (Mr E. J. Bradshaw) in the Riccarton R.S.A. Hall last evening. Z There were almost 250 snore entries than last year, said the secretary (Mr C. A. Breach). Birds were en- • tered from Christchurch. " Ashburton, Timaru, and Dunedin. Membership in the society .was increasing, and the public were becoming more interested, said Mr Breach. In two years’ time, when the silver jubilee show would be ' held, the society hoped to be able to use the Riccarton Town Hall, and expected about 1200 entries. “Beware, keep fingers •way, these birds bite,” said a notice beside the cages containing some innocentlooking Galah parrots in the foreign birds section. However, caution prevailed and few people approached too near.

Birds in the budgerigar and canary classes, which had a combined entry of 681, were not quite up to the standard of previous years because there had not been enough hard frosts to firm the feathers and give them a smooth appearance, the judges said. Some birds were not yet through the moult.

Mrs A. A. Slade, who keeps 150 British birds and canaries in a private aviary at her home, judged the Norwich canaries. She was surprised, she said, to see so many in such good condition as a lot of birds, when they were being prepared for the show had been fed on chicken wheat because of the shortage of bird seed. There was a fine showing of foreign birds considering the climate, said Mr J. H. Miller, judge of the 150 entries in the British and foreign birds sections. He had been judging all over New Zealand and the show was one of the finest exhibitions he had seen. The laying out of the cages was a credit to the club, he said. There was a good showing of African love birds and Australian parakeets and Rosella parrots, said Mr Miller. Several Rosella parrots were set free against the regulataions, from a ship years ago outside the Otago heads, and they were now quite plentiful in Otago and Canterbury, he said. Best bird in the British birds class was a shapely greenfinch owned by Mrs A. A. Slade.

Border and new colour canaries were Judged by Mr A. S. Roberts who said the ; standard was very high but some birds were not up to standard in cage training. The eight entries in the new colour section were disappointing. he said. They did not have the colour they should be showing this time of year. • The show will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. today, and from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., on Saturday.
