LONDON STOCKS
Stability On Way Back (N Z. Press Assn.— Copyright) LONDON, June 7. After a sedate start following the disturbed conditions of last week the London stock market is showing signs of recovering its stability. There is a more positive atmosphere about things and a welcome sprinkling of plus signs has put a better complexion on business though trading has remained quiet. Leading industrials are generally a few pence better although in gilts minus signs continue to outweigh pluses. Earlier in the week London was again overshadowed by another bout of Wall Street nerves. Marking Down After fresh falls in New York there was a fairly widespread marking down of prices in London. Later there was some tentative buying of selected leading shares and prices recovered sufficiently to show small gains on balance in some cases. The market’s better resistance to Wall Street’s second drop is thought to be due to the effect of sentiment of the continued rise in gold reserves in May and the Government’s decision to ease the credit squeeze further by reducing the hire purchase deposit required on consumer durables.
