RACING Southland Prospects At Wingatui Bright

Melotone was scratched yesterday, but there are still bright prospects of a Southland victory in the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Queen Elizabeth Handicap at Wingatui tomorrow. Shangri-La, Melodic and Tampa will be strong form runners for Southland stables.

Tampa impressively won the open sprint on the first day of the Dunedin meeting. Melodic is also a last-start winner, at Riverton at Easter. Shangri-La was placed over 11 furlongs at Wingatui on Monday. Back to a mile, Shangri-La could be expected to go even better from her place to the weights. But it remains to be seen if she is still at the top of her form after two strenuous efforts over ground last week. Shangri-La was fifth in the Birthday Handicap last Saturday. The Birthday Handicap winner. Desert Chief, and the runner-up, Rhythm Rein, are not engaged tomorrow, but that race could still have its « points as a guide. Irrepressible ran third in the Birthday Handicap after being responsible for the pace-making. She can sprint as well as run a middle distance, and will be hard to beat at a mile. Change Possible D. N. Hadfield rode Irrepressible in the Birthday Handicap, but it was not certain yesterday if he would have the mount again. R. J. Skelton, who does much of the riding for the Wilson stable, was without a ride in the Queen Elizabeth Handicap yesterday, and it will not be surprising if he gets the mount on Irrepressible. Skelton, who has already ridden four winners at the meeting, will ride Warfare in the Empire Handicap, the second leg of the double. This will be Warfare’s first open-class test, but she showed she was better than average by southern standards as a hack, and will not be hard to place until she gets up in tthe weights. Smart Hack Golden Blossom is another Wilson-trained galloper good enough to win one of the minor races tomorrow. She is in the Tainui Improvers’ Handicap, which is the second leg of the oncourse double. This Targui mare reappeared after a spell to give a field of hack sprinters a sound beating on the second day of the meeting.

Golden Blossom will almost certainly be the favourite with course backers, most of whom will be supporting either Gladaub or First Mink in the first leg, the Electric Stakes. The Dunedin Steeplechase could be the Otago Steeples all over again. The superior stamina of Bayline and Lucky Bill should help them to pull away from the others near the end. Baylice will meet Lucky Bill 51b better for a halflength defeat in the Otago Steeplechase. That should help to give him a definite edge on the Wingatui 12-year-old. If stamina is to have the final say, Vamoose will be hard to beat in the June Hack Hurdles. Like Lucky Bill, Vamoose is attempting to round off a double in jumping races at the meeting. Vamoose developed good form as a handicap stayer, and could be a good winner for the Winsloe stable at Gore as a hurdler. On-course double fields and form are:—
