TUNNEL TO PORT

Record Drive Last Month The 670 feet driven last menth was the best monthly advance since the Christ-church-Lyttelton road tunnel was begun, the Ministry of Works, as consultant, reported to the Road Tunnel Authority yesterday. During the month, the face was advanced from 3981 ft to 4651 fi, and brought the driving of the main tunnel to 'approximately 75 per cent, complete. There were fewer delays i caused by unreliable loading equipment during the muck-iing-out part of the tunnelling cycle, and the good progress was largely attributable to that factor.

Work on practically all phases of the project continued with three shifts a day, and the average manpower was 140. higher than previously.

The country worked remained hard, ' but easy to drill, and in the latter half of the month appeared to be reverting in part to the red bed material encountered early in the driving programme. Only 67-rock bolts were required, compared with 260 in April. Good progress was also made on the pilot drive from the Lyttelton end. The face was advanced from 505 ft to 1044 ft. At the end of the month the two tunnels were separated by only 466 ft. and the noise of blasting in the (main tunnel was now audible in the pilot drive.
