Writer’s Prediction For Perth (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, June 6. The world champion threemile runner, M. Halberg. may be beaten this year by a: Canadian, B. b idd, according i to a “Melbourne Herald”; sports writer, Steve Hay-: ward. / In has weekly column ’‘Spotlight on Sport,” under the heading “Age May Tell on Halberg.’’ Hayward wrote: “Kidd will be 19 when he competes at the Perth Commonwealth games in November. Halberg will be 29. Some may be inclined to shrug off Kidd’s defeat of Halberg in the 5000 metres race at Compton, California, last week-end. “Hialberg has been doing a lot of running and travelling and could have been tired,” Hayward said. Kidd’s winning time of 13:43.8 was only two-fifths of a second slower than Halberg’s time in winning the 5000 metres at the 1960 Rome Olympics. “Kidd must improve considerably by the Commonwealth games, but Halberg must have reached his peak: as a three-miler or 5000 metres runner,”, Hayward added.
