TRANSFORMERS FOR BROMLEY
Road Transport From Lyttelton
Because suitable railway waggons were not available, three big electrical transformers. each weighing 17 tons, were brought over the Evans Pass road from Lyttelton yesterday afternoon. They are for the Bromley sub-station, where they will double its supply output to the M.E.D.
The transformers, 10ft high, were unloaded from the cargo liner Dunedin Star at 1 p.m. yesterday by the floating crane, Rapaki, and lifted on to the road transporters at No. 5 wharf.
Operations were supervised by Mr D. W. Dickson, an engineer of the New Zealand Electricity Department. Added auxiliary equipment, such as control panels and coolers, had to be received and fitted to the transformers before installation, he said. The new transformers should be in operation at Bromley in about a month, said Mr Dickson. The whole bank of new transformers would transform 30,000 kw from 66,000 volts to 11,000 volts.
The transformers were built by Associated Electrical Industries at Rugby, England, and brought out in the Dunedin Star from London.
