CAUGHT IN WINCH
Fisherman’s Ordeal (from Our Own Reporter) NELSON. June L The skipper of the trawler Sea Raider, Mr O H Hope, of Nelson, suffered a broken ankle and severe leg lacerations late on Wednesday afternoon when his toot was caught by a broken wire, which nulled him through a winch About 4 p.m Mr Hope and his 17-year-old son. William, were hauling in the last catch of the week in Tasman Bay when the accident occurred William Hope, working in the stern, heard his father’s cry and immediately put the winch in reverse and unwound it, releasing the trapped man. “It happened so suddenly that I have no clear recollection of what happened, except for the pain.” Mr Hope said today. "I was caught by what is called a soragged wire, one that by constant use splinters into large wire needles.”
William Hope removed the gumboot from the injured leg and placed his father in a bunk. “I wanted to radiotelephone mother at once and tell her what had happened. but father said we must not worry her," he said. About 90 minutes later the trawler Ngaio <Mr C E Jacobsen) drew alongside and transferred the mate, Mr K Harvey, to help William Hope haul in the net and bring the Sea Raider into port.
Dr. K M. Emanuel, who had been called by radiotelephone, was waiting at the wharf and drove the injured man to hospital Mr Hope was found to have a b-oken ankle, a large part of bone missing and severe lacerations. The foot was put
in a cast and the wounds stitched. Mr Hope was discharged from hospital yesterday and is now at home.
