Tipping
Sir.—That article, “Guide to Tourists on Tipping in New Zealand.” makes sorry reading for one who came to this country some years ago from a revolt ingly tip-ridden England. What a delightful contrast it was to find that New Zealanders, at any rate, had preserved their dignity in this respect, without in any way diminishing their willingness to be of service. Now, it seems, tipping here is not only rife but more or less sanctified by authority, which means that the sky will be the limit where plutocrats are concerned. If ever there was a case of “corrupt! o optimi pesslma,” this is it. — Yours, etc., ILAM. May 25, 1962.
