WELLINGTON. May 25.
Government approval for establishing an operational research unit to study hospital work was announced today by the Minister of Health (Mr McKay) The unit, which will operate within the Health Department's hospital division, will be staffed initially by seconded specialists.
The unit’s director will be Dr I. J. Jeffrey, and the specialist in nursing practice and administration will be Miss S. Lowe. The Public Service Commission has made available Mr L. V. Chaplin, a specialist in work study. It is proposed to add consultant staff to the unit as the need arises.
"Modern hospitals are complex and costly,” said Mr McKay, “and it is essential
that staff and services be used to the best advantage There is obviously a wide field for operation research in hospitals with the associated medical and nursing services.
‘ Dr. Jeffrey returned last year from a study of research methods used in Britain and the United States under a World Health Organisation fellowship. 1 am sure that the use of modern techniques will be very helpful in several important current hospital matters,” said the Minister.
