CHARTER OF U.N.
Violation Claimed (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) GENEVA, May 23. The Secretary-General of the International Commission of Jurists (Sir Leslie Munro, of New Zealand) told reporters in Geneva, today that Indonesia was violating the United Nations Charter by landing paratroops on Dutch New Guinea. He spoke after his return from a four months’ tour of South-east Asia and the Far East. Sir Leslie Munro said the commission “profoundly regrets” that Indonesia seemed determined to seize the territory by force. He said he believed the people of West New Guinea should have the right of selfdetermination. The terms which the Dutch proposed apparently contained that right and were in accordance with the United Nations Charter, and “therefore I deplore these attacks on Dutch territory,” Sir Leslie Munro said. War Pensions Criticised (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) LONDON, May 24. A blind peer, Lord Fraser of Lonsdale, said last night that only Canada of the Commonwealth countries had kept her war pensioners in line with the rising standards of living of her people. Australia, Britain, and New Zealand had not done so. Nor had South Africa, which was now out of the Commonwealth. He and another blind peer, Lord Jenswood, were pressing the Government in the House of Lords for a major improvement in war pensions.
