GOLF Charles “Blows Up” On Last 3 Holes

.Z.P-A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, May 24. The New Zealand golfer, R. J. Charles, missed a fine chance to draw level with H. Weetman, of Britain, in the lead in the first round of the 72-hole Swallow’ and Penfold tournament at Llandudno, North Wales, today.

With three holes to play he needed par figures for a 69 but his game faltered. He three-putted at the sixteenth, bunkered his tee shot at the short seventeenth, and three-putted at the eighteenth after pushing his drive into the rough. Charles’ disappointing finish giave him a 73, and left him equal ninth with P. Allis and R. Playle, of Britain, and R. Tuohy and A. Murray, of Australia. Another New Zealander. M. Busk, returned a 76. He spoilt his chances of a good round with a seven at the ninth and a six at the eleventh. “Miserable Round”

P. Thomson, of Australia, winner of the Piccadilly tournament last week and unbeaten in Britain since last August, was disgusted with what he called a "miserable round.”

His 74 left him way down the list but in good company. One stroke behind him was the Irish Ryder Cup player, C. O’Connor, who finished second to Thomson in the Piccadilly tournament. Competitors changed courses for the socond round, Charles and Busk moving to the shorter 6020-yard North Wales course. CANTERBURY DISTRICT LADIES’ GOLF ASSN.
