Unusual Pigeons In Cage Bird Show
Three varieties of pigeons which have not been seen in Christchurch for many years are on display in the Christchurch Poultry, Pigeon, and Cage Bird Club’s ninety-fifth annual show, which opened at the Fahciers’ Hall, Addington, yesterday. There are eight carrier pigeons, a variety which was the most popular for show purposes in England before 1900. Since then their popularity has decreased, and they have not been shown in Christchurch for about 40 years. These birds are often confused with the homing and racing varieties. It is doubtful if they were ever used to carry ’anything, in spite of their name. The 10 Russian trumpeters and four archangels in the show are the first of these varieties to be shown for more than 25 years. There are 1361 entries, 300 more than last year. Included are several pigeons from Australia and other birds from al] parts of New Zealand.
Generally the show was very good, but it was about three weeks too early for some of the birds to be at their best, said the secretary (Mr J. H. Taylor). The adult birds were not properly through the moult yet. Results were:— STANDARD POULTRY Special awards: South Island championship, all other colours standard, A.
