“WISHES OF MAJORITY”

Reply From Minister (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. May 24. “I am carrying out the wishes of the spokesmen for the majority of the people of Nelson,” the Minister of Civil Aviation (Mr McAloine) said today. He was commenting on a statement from the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Nash), who said that Mr McAlpine’s decision to instruct N.A.C. to withdraw its flights between Nelson and Christchurch in favour of Airlines of New Zealand was “one of the most disintegrating actions that has been taken by a government in relation to air transport” Captain R. D. Daniell, general manager of Airlines of New Zealand, said in Auckland that he was surprised at Mr Nash's statement.

Captain Daniell recalled that the airline was first given permission to operate during the term of the last Labour Government. At that time the airline received a letter from the then Minister of Civil Aviation (Mr Mathison), implying that N.A.C. had no preemptive rights in aviation in New Zealand.
