Chinese Refugees

Sir, —Our politicians have stated that we should treat Asian peoples on a basis of brotherhood and equality. Actions speak louder than words, however, and although New Zealand’s aid under the Colombo Plan is ,to be commended, our apparent “white immigration policy” must have a detrimental effect on our image in the eyes of our Asian neighbours. Might we not allow a quota of Hong Kong refugees into the country each year? It would be a progressive step even if we were to educate and train groups of families and then select those best suited for resettlement. Refugees fleeing Communist China are being denied freedom. By accepting" 100 families, Canada has given hope to those despairing thousands still without homes. Why cannot we be similarly known throughout Asia as a country that cared enough to act? —Yours, etc., CONCERNED. May 23, 1962.
