VICAR TO KEEP VIGIL

St. Peter’s Church, Riccarton The vicar of St. Peter’s Church, Riccarton (the Rev. J. Thomas) will keep a 12-hour vigil outside his church today to receive gifts towards the replacement of his church roof. The 75-year-old stone church has a shingle roof which leaks. It is planned to replace it with slates from Wales, where Mr Thomas was born. The cost of the replacement is estimated to be about £3OOO, of which £l2OO has been collected during the last year. Mr Thomas said that the replacement had to be done urgently. The firm which will import the tiles and replace the roof said that a licence had to be approved before the tiles could be imported. There might be some delay even after the licence had been granted because storms in Great Britain had damaged slate roofs and there was a large demand for replacements. About 20,000 slates would be needed for St Peter’s Church.
