TWO EARTH TREMORS
Recording In
Hawaii
(N2, Press Assn.—Copyright) HONOLULU, May 22
Seismologists in Hawaii yesterday recorded two major earthquakes, one in China, the second in the Fiji Island area. United Press International reported. A seismologist, Mr Robert Eppley, said the South Pacific earthquake had a Richter scale reading of seven and a half. It occurred at 9.15 a.m. New Zealand time. The Coast and Geodetic Survey station at Barbers Point estimated the location of the epicentre at 18.5 degrees south latitude and 178 west longitude. Mr Eppley described the shock as “a large one.” He said there appeared to be little danger of a tidal wave because the earthquake took place deep in the earth’s crust, between 210 and 250 miles deep. Mr Eppley said Coast and Geodetic survey stations in Samoa and other Pacific areas, had been alerted. The South Pacific earthquake was slightly heavier than an earlier shock recorded in Hawaii with an epicentre in China. Mr Eppley said the China earthquake, recorded at 15 minutes past midnight, New Zealand time, would have caused considerable damage had it occurred in a populated area.
