DEPUTY-MAYOR FINED
Double Parking Charge IN.Z. Press Association/ DUNEDIN. May 23 Saying that it “would be a sorry day for Dunedin and for traffic authority if there were one law for councillors and another for the man in the street.” the Dunedin Traffic Superintendent ‘Mr P C. Lunn) conducted the prosecution himself when the Deputy-Mayor, James George Barnes, appeared before Mr J. D. Willis. S.M.. today in the Dunedin Magistrate's Court on a charge of double parking. Mr E. J. Anderson appeared for Barnes who pleaded not guilty. It was ridiculous that the council should bring such a “tawdry and paltry” charge against a man who had been doing a civic duty, presenting prizes at the festival road race. Mr Anderson said. The Magistrate sparked off a heated exchange between Messrs Anderson and Lunn when he asked what had hanpened to the other 20 to 25 drivers whose cars were also double-parked These had been convicted and fined £3. Mr Lunn said Officials must park in the proper way, and must be dealt with in the same way as an ordinary citizen, the Magistrate said. The only thing that distinguishes Barnes's case from those of the other drivers was that his car had been double parked for a lesser period, and he would therefore reduce the penalty to one of £1 with costs £1 10s. No Run of Whales. — Although the season began on May 1 the annua! migratory run of humo-backed whales through Cook Strait from the Antarctic had -n yet properly begun • spokesman for a Tory Channel whaling station said yesterday.
