CONTROL OF EROSION
Higher Costs Predicted (N.Z. Press Association) TIMARU, May 22. Expenditure on soil conservation and river control had continued to increase over the years, said the Minister of Works (Mr Goosman) when opening the New Zealand Catchment Boards' Association annual conference today. It would have to continue to increase if the conservation of valuable lands Was to be achieved. Mr Goosman listed the following amounts voted for annual expenditure: 1958-59, £1,238,000; 1959-60. £1,291,000; 1960-61, £1,449,000; 1961-62, £1,665,000; 1962-63 (provisional figure), £1,900,000. “Over all, good progress is being made, but not as fast as many of us would desire,” said Mr Goosman. "More and more people are becoming convinced of the necessity of the work being done by catchment boards and I have noticed vigorous opponents in the past that have become supporters today, and, in some cases, active participants. "We will always have floods and erosion and we will always have to fight and control them,” Mr Goosman said. “The general opinion has grown that the catchment board system is the best system 40 continue that fight.”
