Three Cup Winners In Waimate Fields

The last three Waimate Cup winners have engagements at the Waimate Racing Club’s annual meeting on Saturday, but all three will not be attempting to complete a Cup double.

Brown Watch, the 1960 Cup winner, has an engagement in, the open sprint, the President’s Handicap, but Rhythm Rein, last year’s winner, and Captain Hunt, the 1959 winner, will contest the major race.

Rhythm Rein, which won under D. N. Hadfield a year ago, will be ridden this time by W. D. Skelton, and will be one of the stronger fancies after some solid runs for placings lately.

Persuasive and Kastanea. the minor place-getters behind Rhythm Rein last year, are engaged again. Persuasive has won only one race, the Nelson Redwood Memorial this season, but she has kept adding minor placings to a serviceable record, and win not be one of the lesser lights in the Waimate Cup field.

Captain Hunt was trained at Riccarton by C. C. McCarthy when he won the Waimate Cup as a four-year-old three years ago.

This half-brother of the good winner Water Boy has not managed to win a race this season but he beat some fair performers—one was Rhythm Rein—in finishing second behind Napra over a mile at Riverton at Easter.

Captain Hunt is now trained at Wingatui by C. Millar, who also prepares Royal News, likely favourite for the Waitangi Champion Hack Handicap, which is the second leg of the double. This is the South Island’s longest race for hack stayers and the capacity field offers evidence of its popularity with owners as well as with the public. Crowded Field A capacity field is also pretty well certain for the Trial Plate, There are four reserves, making a total of 21 acceptors. The club could well follow Amberley’s lead in running such a race in divisions. Ten or so in each division is quite .enough for a small track like Waimate’s. Seventeen, the safety limit, is more than enough. A dividend race would have the added advantage of taking two instead of one out of toe maiden class performers and anything that can be done along those lines is to be applauded while there are so many non-win-ners faced with so few opportunities to improve their status.
