ON AWARD RATES
Trades Hall Caretaker (NZ Press Association) WELLINGTON. May 23 Some amusement was caused when the Arbitration Court, hearing the general wage order increase application. was told that the caretaker at the Wellington Trades Hal! was on award minimum rates. Later. Mr Justice Tyndall remarked that he was sure this was the only man. at this stage, getting the minimum. James Henry Collins, secretary of the Caretakers' Union, said the majority of caretakers throughout the country would be on the minimum. This even applied to the caretaker at the Wellington Trades Hall. Mr A. P O’Shea, representing the Sheepowners’ Federation, which is opposing the application. later asked another witness if he did not think that paying the Trades Hall caretaker minimum rates suggested the Labour movement believed this adequate. The witness. Chip Bailey secretary of the Wellington Drivers’ Union, said the Trades Hall was not run by the Labour movement, but by a group of trade unions who appeared to think so.
