Thailand

Sir,—Throughout the grab-for-colonies period of historyj Thailand was lucky enough to preserve her independence. Therefore, why all the current fuss about the premature threat of Communist “aggression"? Perhaps Thailand’s reactionaries have an uneasy conscience. She had better be careful not to become entangled with the reactionaries of America, Australia, or New Zealand. With a population of 26 million souls, compared with the Laotian population of about 1.5 million, divided into three squabbling sections, it looks as if Siam is squealing prematurely. The two Laotian towns which may be threatened have, together, only a population of 15,000. mostly natives still in the hay kilt stage. Both Siam and Laos could do with a little of New Zealand’s social security legislation, which would ease the poverty of the lower orders. I do hope the “foot-draggers” will heed this information and keep on dragging their feet as long as they can.—Yours, etc.,

RALPH S. WHEELER. Timaru, May 21, 1962.
