MAIDEN RACES

Invercargill Club Plans “The Press" Special Service INVERCABGILL, May 22 The Invercargill Trotting Club is to consider the deletion of races for maiden pacers from its programmes for next season when it will race on its recently-formed five-furlong track. Maiden races would be replaced by additional 4min 45sec class races in an attempt to build up the sadly depleted 4min 41sec Southland Cup class events. The club proposes running non-totalisator maiden races to replace the events dropped from its meetings. These would carry normal stakes, with the likelihood of a sweepstake as well. Most of the work has been completed in establishing the five-furlong track —the first in Southland. The undertaking has been a major one for the Invercargill club, which has also been responsible for the formation of a ramp between the stewards' stand and the southern stand. The new track will be opened at the club’s first meeting next season on December 22.
