DEPUTY TO RETIRE
Captain E. A. McDonald Captain E. A. McDonald, deputy commander of the United States Navy Antarctic support force, is to retire from the service on July 1. News of his retirement was received at the American base at Harewood yesterday. Next month he is to go to London to receive the Royal Geographical Society’s Medal for “outstanding services to Antarctic exploration” from the society's patron, Queen Elizabeth.
Captain McDonald is a veteran of polar sea operations His last task before leaving New Zealand in March was to command the rescue bid by two icebreakers, the Eastwind and the Glacier, which went to the aid of the ice-bound Republic of South Africa off the Princess Martha coast of Antarctica. The ship steamed clear of the pack-ice before the ice-breakers arrived.
