MARKING FEES

Minister’s Conunent

(A.Z. Press Association;

WELLINGTON, May 14. But for the action of the Post-primary Teachers’ Association, the Education Department would expect not the slightest difficulty in recruiting enough fully qualified school certificate markers, the Minister of Education (Mr Tennent) said today. He was commenting on a further statement by the association on rates of payment for marking papers. Directly after he had announced a 25 per cent, increase in the fees the association had decided to recommend its members not to offer their services as. markers unless rates were further increased, he said. This attempt to coerce the Government was quite unacceptable, said Mr Tennent. It was preposterous, therefore, for the association to attempt to shift responsibility for the situation from themselves to the Government and the department, he added.
