WELLINGTON, May 11. ’pHIRTY-CNE years’ service
in three armies ended this week with the retirement of Major R. T. Marriott, Royal New Zealand Army Ordnance Corps. Major Marriott, who has been the Army’s Chief Ammunition Technical Officer at Army Headquarters, Wellington, for the last two years, was born at Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. He started his military career by joining the Irish Guards in 1931 and serving with them for 10 years. His next unit was the 4th Prince of Wales's Own Gurkha Riles, India, and in IM3 he joined the Indian Army Ordnance Corps. In 1949 he joined the Royal New Zealand Army Ordnance Corps and his first appointment was depot inspecting ordnance officer at the Central Military District Ammunition Depot at Trentham Camp.
In his last appointment, Major Marriott was the Army’s top technician in the inspecting, testing and .Moving of all ammunition used by units ot the New Zealand Army. It was largely his responsibility to ensure that the strict safety regulations were carried out and that units received the
tion needed for their training programmes. He also controlled experimental work and the dissemination of technical publications to keep the Army's ammunition service up to date. Major Marriott is well known throughout the Army for his interest in boxing and in Rugby football. As well as being senior boxing judge of the Inter-Services Boxing Association, he has been both chairman of the InterServices Sports Committee and manager of the Central Military Districts team. .
